Approaches
Schema Therapy is an in depth approach aimed at exploring underlying 'schema' which might contribute to problems. Schema can be described as personality traits and unhelpful coping mechanisms. The identification of schema involves the use of a personality questionnaire and an in depth history discussion. Approaches are applied on an individual basis. No two clients receive exactly the same treatment, because no two clients are the same.

At Melbourne Psychology Practice we utilise only evidence-based therapies, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Schema Therapy. The aim of CBT is to address unhelpful thinking associated with negative mood states. Unhelpful thinking usually takes place in the form of cognitive distortions, which are patterns or generalisations in thinking which are common to people with anxiety or mood problems. By identifying distortions and engaging in helpful thinking, clients become better able to reduce negative mood states.
